Adding a Video Camera to Your Home Security System
There are so many elements to take into consideration when you are installing or upgrading your home security system. Now that video surveillance cameras are more accessible to the general public, thanks to an increased popularity that has driven prices down, you may be thinking about adding a video camera to your security system for added protection against unwanted intrusions. Here are a few things to take into consideration when you are looking into video surveillance cameras.
You must begin by determining precisely what you want a video camera for. Some people want to install surveillance in their children’s rooms, so as to keep an eye on them, particularly while they are sleeping. This type of need is far different from trying to protect your home office, your yard, or your garage. If you indeed have a desire to keep your children under camera supervision, you might take into account that they spend quite a bit of time in other rooms in the house, not just in the bedroom. They also may be left unattended to play or watch movies in the living room or den, which would require another camera.
Make a list of the things that you want to secure the most. Is it your home entertainment system, your jewelry box, or your file cabinet with irreplaceable documents like birth and marriage certificates? If you can say “yes” to all of the above, you might want to install various cameras – focusing on doors and entryways that lead into the areas where the items are kept, and well as the particular items themselves. Children, of course, cannot have a camera zoned in on them at all times, but you can think about which areas they spend the most time in, as mentioned before.
So once you have determined what areas need to be protected, you can tally up the number of cameras that you will need. There are all kinds available, so educate yourself about them before purchasing anything. A major consideration is the video quality – if you cannot make out any details on the video, what is the purpose of recording anything? The benefits of a security camera include being able to catch any perpetrators and track down your stolen belongings, but this will not be possible if you cannot make out the features of an intruder. You don’t need digital TV quality images, but you should be able to clearly see small details on the video. If all you want, however, is to have the presence of a video surveillance camera that will be evident to and deter thieves, you do not need to spend the extra cash to invest in the highest-quality images.
Be sure that, before investing in a video surveillance system in addition to your home security system, you have identified your needs and researched the options thoroughly. Don’t go overboard with the cameras; the truth is that you probably don’t need to secure every area of your home with a video camera. Do not let yourself be talked into investing in more than you yourself deem fit.
